Alia Iacta Est Ltd. has been in business since 1989.
ALIA is a registered business name of the company.
The company is basically myself, Brian Walsh, backed up by family. Where it is appropriate for an
assignment, I network with other resources.
Consider me as a knowledgeable, experienced and approachable resource on Information
Technology matters.
Specific services offered are indicated below.
My involvement with computer technology stretches back some 25 years, working for both end-user
organisations and technology vendors.
This includes work on solutions in manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, retail, services and civil
engineering - and always close to the 'bleeding edge' of technology.
I have run my own business for enough years to have become intimately familiar with the 'bleeding
edge' of trade!
Are you transcribing information between different information systems?
Do you want to put a modern face and analysis capability on a trusty but outdated system?
Do you have new computers but find it difficult to get a collection of
accounts/spreadsheet/word-processing/database/communication software packages to work as a
whole?
Many organisations could get a better return from their investment in technology.
I can help you achieve that.
Where appropriate, elements of existing Windows-based applications such as Microsoft Office are used.
Building systems from working components can be more cost-effective than creating from the ground
up.
Searching for information?
Allow me to introduce you to the various tools available. Alternatively, ask me to locate relevant
sources of information on the Internet.
Producing Information?
I can work with you and your marketing or internal publishing resources to design presentations that
take account of the special characteristics of the medium.
Your web presentations will be promoted in appropriate areas of the Internet.
As an experienced software developer, I can make use of emerging object-oriented tools such as
Java to produce innovative Internet and internal network applications and presentations.
That same experience enables me to develop server CGI programs to enhance the site.
Internet technologies can be applied on your private network. Developments in database access, conferencing and cooperative working are providing a rich source of technologies which can be integrated into your corporate information systems.
The process of installing a new information system or converting from an existing system exposes an
organisation to risk. The main risk is one of losing timely control of information and commercial
transactions. You take the risk (knowingly or unknowingly) in order to gain benefit from the new
system.
The risk may be minimised by use of appropriate project control and by attention to the human factors
involved in and surrounding the system. Assumptions of any sort can be the kiss of disruption! For
various reasons, many organisations evaluate investment in "computers" less critically than they would
view investment in a machine or other asset.
Help from an experienced professional before and during implementation will reduce disruption to
business operations. Call me.
As an example of this type of work, I am currently assisting a client to move from SNI's COMET TOP to SAP.
I have developed software to automate the transfer of master and transaction data into SAP. This covers financial, stock, warehouse and manufacturing systems.
During transition, sales and purchase invoices are transferred automatically from those TOP modules into SAP financial, with conversion of accounts and cost centres on-the-fly.
I also developed software to convert legacy manufacturing documentation into Word documents.
I can work with you on phased, tailored training on information technology topics. The approach
works best when a specific project is in mind. This is in contrast to 'production line' training.
Recently I have worked as a tutor on the "Managing Strategic Information" module of the MBA
program run by Henley Management College and on the "Information Management" module of the
Diploma in Management program run by Henley Distance Learning Ltd.
