s'abit rough sometimes, when one of us calls into Tir and finds no one around. Lets call this a 'venue' for leaving things that you may have discussed had you found another Tir na nOgian around at the time.

I guess this happens to me more often than many of you ... it's all Acc's fault, of course, 'cause he doesn't promote this site *sigh* (ducks for cover).
Sarette has the weather covered; Celt has maximised the limerick from us all; Seamus caters for the absurd. Maybe this is for the general convo stuff ..........
Hello friends,
- my kids all got good mid year reports! .. even Tim!! *smile*
- I am VERY glad it is Friday! and 'month end is over' for June, which for us here in Aus also means the end of the financial year (we all know that headache at work). It's also the last day of an old Tax system for Australia, and the begining of bedlam tomorrow (at least until things settle down) with the implementation of GST.
- I learned this afternoon of the suicide of a friend.
- Thunder and lightening storms were predicted in our weather forecast .... and I have just heard the first of the Thunder .... time for me to go.

A BIG THANKS, to Lacie!
My "mericannn" son, Brendan, and his crew will be invading Oz on the 13th. Too bad you're on the West Coast! They've got a fair "Waltzing Mathilda" and "Advance Australia Fair" rehearsed. Course I'm sure you NEVER hear these in the course of the year, there? *G*
By Cbleidd on Tuesday, July 4, 2000 - 08:50 am:
Lacie: Tabs for "American Pie" and "Vincent"? (I grew up on Don McLean's very best album. *sigh*) Check your local music shop; someone's bound to have the sheet music for those songs, even a book.
"Starry, starry night/Paints your palette blue and grey/Look out on a summer's day/With eyes that know the darkness in my soul/Shadows on the hills/Sketch the trees and the daffodils/Catch the breeze and the winter chills/In colors on the snowy linen land..." Lovely song, that...
I can only wish I didn't have to work today; nonetheless, it's one of six paid holidays on the Stream calendar, wherein we work eight hours and are paid for 20. (Sounds good, folks? Last time I had this, though, on Memorial Day, it wound up being not more than $20 extra take-home pay on my check. Ah, well...I can always use the extra.) And my parents' poor little dog will be going out of her head when the neighbors decide to set off their fireworks, which I won't mind missing! :)

It is a pity, Jumm Jumm, that your son and his mates couldn't get to 'pop in on' lace!! I am sure we would have had a hoot of a time!! and he could have bought lots of stories home to you about 'lacie's mad house' LMAO

NEEDS HELP!!!!!!
Ok, this is a serious question and I'd appreciate serious answers *crosses fingers* *L*
If a woman asks a guy out, does that make him think less of the whole thing than if he chases her?
Reason: someone I've "known" very, very casually for the past 5 years or so just found out I'm newly single and made a passing "you could ask me out to dinner now; I'm an equal opportunity kind of guy" comment. But everything I've read says that if I did, it would mean less to him than if he pursued me, and that if I did he would never truly appreciate me.
HELP!!!! I need honest opinions on this. Guys, please help! Playboys and those who aren't..*G*
Gals..those who have and those who never do.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By Seamusmccool on Sunday, July 30, 2000 - 05:38 am:
It's been many years since I've dated or that any woman wanted to date me.....besides my lovely, tolerant wife, of course *G*.....but, these are my thoughts, for whatever they are worth.
I find his passing comment about YOU asking HIM out to dinner a little strange, but I'm not sure of the context in which it was said....so, I'll try not read anything into that right now.
Personally, I (and hopefully other guys comfortable with their manliness...*g*) would not mind if someone nice like yourself made the first move. This pursuing nonsense is made out to be more than what it deserves to be sometimes.
Some of the old rules have changed about who does what first. All, I have to do is to look at my 18 year old son to realize that. He and his friends seem much less "uptight" about asking/being asked/being seen with someone, etc. than me and my friends away back when.
If only I were single, LS....*s*......Really, for somebody worth the effort, I would not hesitate if I were you, dear Soul.
With love from your friend,
Seamus McCool
By Accasbel on Sunday, July 30, 2000 - 10:30 am:
Everyone is individual.
Conventions are simply general guidelines.
In the end we have to make our own decisions. We enjoy the outcome or we suffer the consequences. If we lived our lives out of books, the world would be a boring, repressed place.
Men in general may be conditioned to be 'dominant' (or to appear to be so). Any man who thinks less of a woman for approaching him is not truly alive. He's a slave of convention.
Maybe the fellow is as unsure of the situation as you are. It's not uncommon for people to half-suggest things in a jokey way. It gives them an escape route if the suggestion is out of order.
It's your move. He's kinda/probably/maybe made an opening. I couldn't advise any further, but I suspect that the situation should not be rushed, initially at least. At the same time, don't let it drag on for centuries :)

By Mama on Monday, July 31, 2000 - 05:05 am:
I would like to add my two cents (that's about all it is probably worth). I do agree with Acc,,,he sorta, probably, has made a move towards going out with you and is protecting himself by phrasing it the way he did. But, you don't have to rush into a "date"---slow is usually the best course of action. As a mom of three teenage girls, I tell them to stay in groups---that way, if the guy turns out to be junk, you aren't in a pickle!!! Hope this helps a little--let us know!
everyone's MAMA

By Guest on Tuesday, August 1, 2000 - 01:48 pm:
You go girl! Ask that man out! Maybe he is unsure if you are ready to date. By telling you that you could ask him out, it leaves the ball in your court. If you are NOT ready to date, he hasn't put himself in a position to be turned down(which is not a great feeling)and if you are ready, just think how flattered he will be !

Coming a bit late to this subject, but...from the point of view of one who was painfully shy and extremely self-conscious growing up (and still very reserved even now), I would not mind at all if a woman asked me out. Then again, one must always take into account the one doing the asking.
However, if one is already married and trying to score some extracurricular nookie...then there's somebody who's cruisin' for a bruisin'! Take him down hard, LS!

Sorry about the long absence...been busy, and on the nights I'm here, haven't had as much inclination to come to Tir (no offense, Acc, just don't always feel up to hitting my favorites). Vis-a-vis your little offer, Lace, were it not for the thousands of miles between us, me here in Memphis and you there in your little corner of Aus, I'd most likely take you up on it. :) I'm not one to refuse dinner and good conversation, ever.

Well, look at like this, then, Lace...it's not precisely a rejection so much as it is a request for a rain check. Which is to say, if I'm ever in your neck of the woods, and the offer still stands, it's a date. :) After all, one never knows when one might find oneself in Australia...
By Lacie on Sunday, September 24, 2000 - 06:03 am:

Hey, Gray, how about a move to Tennessee, where y'all kin git yew some Southern hospitality? :) (Y'all come back now, y'hear?)
Speaking of moving, I have recently left Memphis for the mid-state region of TN (living about an hour east of Nashville). And they say Samhain is a time of change...and how! I have moved in with my girlfriend of nearly seven months and her two young daughters, switched jobs (goodbye Stream, hello Toshiba)--and that in itself has proven an adventure, as it requires me to drive to Lebanon (here in middle Tennessee, that's "Leb-nun," not to be confused with the Middle Eastern country), about 72 miles one way (but it pays MUCH better than Stream ever did) each day, which means my car will be getting oil changes every month--and will be starting back to school in December (and sometimes wonder if I'm not biting off more than I can chew) to earn my Bachelor's Degree from ITT Technical Institute. Whew!
I guess you can all tell I never do anything halfway, do I? It really is something of an all-or-nothing proposition, what I've laid out for myself for the next year.

*WOW* Sounds like the 'Times they are a-changin' *smile* .. Good Luck to you ... there is an old saying I use with myself and my kids .. "Dreams come in a size too large, so you can grow into them." You will manage all of this, and much more.

Cbleidd - Tennessee??? I grew up in Missouri and that region ain't know for suthern hospitality. It's more known for the Hatfields & McCoys and shine runnun'. Being labled a redneck is one thing..but hillbilly!!! Na thankee.
But I hear tell that Tennessee is aweful purty and I'd love to visit sometime. Besides, everyone gotta see Graceland once in their life huh??
Seriously, I wish you luck, patience and success. Sounds like you bit off a helluva big bite but a lessor person would have taken the easier path. I'm not certain of the author but it's like that poem with the less traveled path...I too would travel that one.

Well done Lacie..it can be really depressing when you come in and there's no-one around...especially when you've just gotta get something off your chest.....
I've been surfing all afternoon to try and find somewhere else to chat....so as not to out stay my welcome in the Tir...but Jeez everywhere seems dominated by (only slightly) post pubescents with nasty attitudes and little command of the English language OR anyone who wants to see my shaved...something or hard...something!!! Gawd!!!
Golly, I'm not averse to shaved things or hard things in their right place but jeez doesnt anybody read anymore? Where can I find gentle folk like yourselves who have read something (and aren't ashamed to say it) or done something..which can be discussed without parental permission being required....?
This says to me that the Tir is a rare and beautiful thing..(most of the time)..
If anyone can refer me to a chat room where people actually chat I'd love to hear about it...esp if they talk about books/movies/etc...
Thanks for allowing me to share that with you...*S*

Well Leda, the search for "intelligent life" seems to continue. I've done some roaming and always come home to Tir for good conversation. We can talk seriously or be rowdy and have a good time. Or cry on one another's shoulders. But at the same time, because we're "mature" *giggle* adults, we don't spend all our time hanging in the chat room. In the past the evening hours usually were the busiest, being we all got off work, had dinner and put the kiddies to bed. Sometimes it gets rolling again real late too so our down under friends can join in.
Hmmm lost my train of thought.....*wanders out looking for it*

*stepping over bits of gray(get it?..tee hee)matter strewn about*..er Graymyst is this what you were looking for?? Hate it when that happens....you've got a perfectly good thought process happening and poof....train leaves the station....*S*
Thanks for the thoughtful response....
