Soooooo lets get the ball rolling.
What do you really look forward to on stepping off that airplane,The views,the clean air,the people.....?

And anyone interested in a few days fishing ....off the Galway coast other than McG and Indigo?

Stepping off the airplane Lad, I look forward to a nice pint o' Guinness or two in a welcoming local pub, somewhere nice n' comfy to bed down fer the night (jet lag recovery from the bum of the earth can take a good 3 days to conquor, but I'm tough *L*), a nice meal followed by a traditional Irish music session with some o the locals.

In the following days, some leisurely sight seeing ~ land and sea (fishing would be great), local history (again, nothing too heavy on the jet lagged brain).

Personally an arts component such as visiting thriving local cottage industries, artist co-operatives or gallery would appeal. Perhaps take in a local festival or faire if any are on at the time.

Most importantly, the meeting of nOggers! I can hear the craic now, as I dream! *L* Perhaps an nOgger entertainment show each night after dinner, whereby Tir's situations are brought to life...such as...a live version of "Name that Song" with appropriate (or more appropriately, an inappropriate booby prize) rewards for the winner/s.

A night of "Irish Pictionary" *L*, or Irish theatre sport (think of the show "Who's Line is it Anyway?") ...where the nOggers get into groups and compete against each other.

Perhaps a night of learning a traditional craft or dance or song by candlelight together whilst sampling local delicacies/wines?

A day's shopping (Under the guidance of the essential therapies unit - to include a pampering session of sorts; spa/jacuzzi, massage/seaweed bath).

Maybe a sports evening depending on numbers?...Local pub to be approached to set up a night of darts, indoor bowls, pool, snooker, etc...competing groups intermingled with local hot shots, fer a bit o' fun n' laughter.

Okay, that lot is just off the top of me head! If I don't make it over, I could still come up with some great entertaining and fun ideas fer yez! One needs to drag out a map of Cobh to see what's in the area really.

*grins and falls asleep dreaming of a trip back!*

Just hope the house doesn't land on any witches. It really annoys them when that happens.

There is a train line to Cobh - for those who don't like the idea of driving on the "wrong" side of the road.
However, the rail network in Ireland is very limited in geographic coverage, so car rental is indeed best for a grand tour.
Bus routes are fairly good.

My very first view of Cobh was of a wino shaking an empty beer can and hopping it off the "Welcome to Cobh" sign in disgust.We laughed so hard I almost crashed the car.I am almost definitely there if it happens in August.I'll be in Thailand for either June or July so if it happens then I'm out of contention :(

I remember a wino in Cobh who used to wear a WW2 German officer's hat and big boots and used to hang around the old Post Office. I wonder if he is still alive?
I would recommend driving up East Hill for the best view of the harbour and driving across the river ferry in Carrigaloe to Crosshaven for the best view of the Town, although there is a boat trip that is also worth doing.
If there is a get together, how about doing it during the Regatta?
Either way it is a great location from which to explore. Locally you have the Heritage Centre, the Sirius Art Centre & the Museum. The Jameson Distillery is down the road in Midleton and of course Cork is only 15 miles drive. Waterford, Clonakilty and Kinsale are close as are the Garinish Islands (well worth a visit) and the Ring of Kerry.
Enough of the Travel Agent role, I will leave the advertising to Acc :) and I hope that when a date is decided upon that I can get to meet you all in person. :)

well looks like I will FINALLY be visiting the Auld Sod, may even make a detour from the Ring of Kerry, down to Cobh to see the docks where me grandfather left for America, back in 1905...*G*

You didn't see any of my relatives then.You'll never find a more complete set of dipso's.I don't know if it's still in existence but the old Napoleonic War base of Ft.Davis would be worth a visit.If vast,insane,spooky ruins scaled for smallies are your thing.I was stationed there for a month in '92 and still have nightmares.Might be a bit of a laddish excursion though :)
