The What

The Ashore section contains notes on, and links to, web resources of interest to people training for the RYA Day Skipper or Coastal Skipper programs.
The material does go beyond the syllabus for those courses, so Yachtmasters may find some goodies here.

The Weather and Tides sections should be of general interest.

The Afloat section contains images from some cruises along the South Coast of Ireland.

The Links section has ..... well... good links.

Where these pages have a geographical focus, it is on UK and Ireland, with some specific references to the coast from Cork Harbour down towards South West of Ireland.

The sailing section of this site began in 1998 as a work-in-progress. 'Progress' is relative.

The Why

The boating and sailing of my childhood and teen years was all practical and picked up on a need-to-know basis. Course to steer was not an issue. Apart from some localised spots, tidal vectors around Cork Harbour and the South are parallel to the coast. There were other non-issues.
There's a rising tide of regulation heading all our ways, and "need-to-know" is going to encompass a great deal more than it used to.

To fill in the gaps, I took a few formal shore-based and practical cruising courses at Eddie English's International Sailing near my home in Cobh, Co. Cork.
Being of a nerdish disposition, my instinct is to check the Net for information given any sort of excuse. The Net is largely uncharted and shrouded in fog. These pages are a sort of pilot book based around what I found to be of immediate interest to skippers. As a designer, it's relatively easy for me to set up and maintain the site on a 'pro bono' basis. Enjoy!
